How Much Does a Family Photographer Cost in Rochester, MN? Our Pricing Philosophy, Explained

There are two kinds of tattoos. One is done in someone's basement with a homemade gun; the other is done by an artist like Kat Von D. Both use ink. Both end up on skin. Nobody would ever say they're the same product, so nobody expects to pay the same price. Family photography works the same way. It's an art, not a commodity, and prices reflect that.

When you hire a Rochester, MN family photographer, you're not just paying for ink and paper. You're paying for a whole list of intangibles that make the artist and their art special. These are some of ours:

Prices vary dramatically between photographers because we are all different. We don’t have the same mix of intangibles or offer the same services. Some of us are full-time professionals, others are building a portfolio while working another full-time career. None of this is bad or wrong. It’s just good to know when making comparisons.

What We Charge

There are two common ways family photographers structure pricing: all-inclusive, where one flat fee covers the session and digital files, and the service-and-product model, where you pay a session fee and purchase photo products (prints, canvases, albums, cards) separately. We use the second model. We charge $475 per hour for family, newborn, and baby portrait sessions. That fee, sometimes called a retainer in this industry, covers the photo shoot (only) and is paid in advance to hold your date and time on our calendar. This fee also includes complimentary services (in addition to our list of intangibles, above):

• Wardrobe styling

• Location scouting

• Image curation (we pick the best, most magazine-worthy photos)

Scott determines how long your photo session will take after meeting with you and learning about your wants and needs. More people, more locations, more outfits, and more technical complexity add time. That's why we can’t quote an exact price until we talk with you.

Travel

Getting to and from your photo shoot location is usually free. We don't charge travel fees within a 60-mile radius of Rochester, which covers the Twin Cities. Because Scott and I also have family in Crosslake (located in the middle of North Central Minnesota's cabin country), we often extend the same courtesy within a 60-mile radius of there too. Travel fees for locations outside those areas are calculated using mileage, not our hourly rate.

Travel to multiple locations during your portrait session, however, is different. That is billed at our regular hourly rate because we are actively working, planning shots, and keeping things moving.

Products Are Sold à la Carte

We don't sell packages. Prints, canvases, books, and cards are all priced and sold separately so you can order exactly what you want. Our prices include these services:

• Color correction

• Retouch

• Design (including custom art displays for your actual walls)

• Gift wrapping

• Delivery

• Installation

• Social media versions of ordered images

A photo shoot plus product order can easily total $2,000 to $3,000.

Why We Don't Like to Hand Over Digital Files

We don't like to give customers digital files (to print on their own) because Scott is a former darkroom photography teacher. He wants to see a photograph through the entire creative process - all the way from ideation to final print. That’s how he makes his vision a reality.

A big part of that reality is making sure the color is right. We use print vendors that only serve professional photographers, not the general public. We choose them for their quality (inks, papers, binding, finishing) and attention to detail. Then, we calibrate our monitors to match their equipment so colors stay true to life. That matters more than you realize. Most consumer print vendors run images through a "standard," middle-of-the-road color setting that doesn't account for variations in skin tone, so a beautifully color-corrected image can come out looking flat or off.

Additional concerns include clarity and cropping. Most people don't have the software, knowledge, or skill to properly size and format a digital image for different types of print products. Large prints need a higher resolution, or they appear blurry. Canvases need extra space around the edges so your face doesn’t wrap over the top.

Earning Digital Files

That said, we recently started offering a way for customers to earn full-size, retouched digital masters. The number of digital masters is based on how much you spend in a single order session. The more you spend, the more masters you earn. The first spending level, $4,000, earns three retouched masters. This isn't meant to replace ordering prints or wall art from us. It's meant to give our families something for archival and legacy purposes, the peace of mind of having a true, high-quality digital copy of their favorite images, safely stored.

Not automatically. Clients can earn full-size, retouched digital masters based on total order spend, intended for archival purposes. We mostly handle printing ourselves through trusted, color-calibrated vendors to make sure the final product matches our creative intent.

Why do family photography prices vary so much between photographers?
