Olive Juice in People Magazine
St. Martin’s Press hired us to photograph a new author, Nickolas Butler, in April 2013. Nickolas needed a headshot for the jacket of his first book, Shotgun Lovesongs. The book was scheduled to be released in September 2013. The publishing industry couldn’t wait for it to hit store shelves because everyone believed it was loosely based on Nickolas’ childhood friendship with indie folk singer Bon Iver. The two grew up together in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Of course, we didn’t know any of this when we got the call from St. Martin’s Press. We thought it was a prank and insisted the company pay us in advance to prove the job was real. The company did and Scott drove to St. Paul to photograph Nickolas at his home. Scott wasn’t particularly proud of the photos he took - it was a drab wintery day and Nickolas didn’t want to smile. We sent the final photos to St. Martin’s Press and didn’t know what became of them until a year later, when I found this copy of People Magazine on a plane (we were flying to Mexico for Spring Break).
